U.S. House Republicans once again went on the offense, and U.S. House Democrats once again showed us who they really are.
A few weeks ago, the U.S. House took up a Republican-led resolution disapproving of the Washington, D.C. Council's decision to revise their criminal code. The revision, as the White House itself stated, would have reduced maximum penalties "for offenses like murders and other homicides, armed home invasion burglaries, armed carjackings, armed robberies, unlawful gun possession, and some sexual assault offenses." The Washington Post Editorial Board added that it would further tie “the hands of police and prosecutors while overwhelming courts.”
When the votes were tallied, 173 House Democrats, including Indiana's two lone Democrats, Reps. Frank Mrvan and André Carson, voted against the resolution. If you were wondering, that's 81 percent of House Democrats.
Weeks after the vote, when it became clear that the resolution would pass the U.S. Senate, President Joe Biden stated that he would sign it — a huge flip-flop that left House Democrats out to dry. Later, it was reported that those 173 House Democrats “voted along with what they thought was the White House’s stance..."
So that begs the question: Do House Democrats like Reps. Mrvan and Carson value criminals over law-abiding citizens or do they just vote however they think Joe Biden wants them to?
Neither is acceptable, and both serve as a great reminder of the important work we have ahead of us to not just keep the U.S. House, but to take back the U.S. Senate and elect a Republican president in 2024.
