Hey John,
This week, lawmakers in the House and Senate jointly re-introduced the Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act of 2023, which would effectively ban law enforcement use of facial recognition in the United States.1 The bill would immediately stop federal agencies in the U.S. from using facial recognition technology.

The bill is an opportunity to stop law enforcement use of this flawed technology.
Use of facial recognition technology is already spreading rapidly:
-
No camera safe from potential exploitation: The FBI and Department of Defense helped develop facial recognition tech that could be used with footage from cameras already in place throughout our communities.2 The threat of persistent tracking and surveillance of Americans is real.
-
Face scan to fly? If you’ve traveled recently, the TSA may have asked to scan your face at airport security. While the procedure is technically “opt in,” there is little-to-no information about how to do so. And TSA personnel have pushed back when people have asked to not have their face scanned.3
-
Taxes and your biometric data: The IRS and other agencies continue to use a company called ID.me to verify your identity when logging onto their websites, which uses facial recognition as one of its tools for verification.
-
Innocent people arrested: News stories regularly surface about innocent individuals who’ve found themselves behind bars after being misidentified by facial recognition technology.4,5,6
Will you help push our Ban Facial Recognition coalition into high gear to support this bill, right now? We need to fight to get this passed.7 If we can amplify widespread support of the bill and it passes, we’ll be one step closer to banning dangerous facial recognition tech across various industries including at festivals, stores, and universities. Help us put facial recognition tech in check!
