Friends —
I wanted to take a moment to share why I am in this fight for American families across the country with you.
My mom and I immigrated from Peru to America when I was just 5 years old, unknowing of the endless opportunity this country would place in my hands.
I grew up to become an educator, teaching college students from across the country in Long Beach.
But I knew my true passion in life was in service — to give back to the community and country that made me, and I was honored to be elected Mayor of Long Beach, sworn in with my mother by my side.
Then began my hardest battle yet, COVID-19. The effects of COVID-19 hit too close to home when both my mother and stepfather, tragically passed from the virus. My mother was one of the many health care workers who put her life on the line to help others during the pandemic.
After their passing, I threw myself into my work, vowing to work as hard as I could to ensure other families wouldn’t experience the same pain I did. And Long Beach ended up being known nationwide for becoming the first city in California to vaccinate educators and the first city to vaccinate 99% of its senior population.
I love Long Beach and I love this country, so I want to make sure every person, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or sexuality, has the same opportunity that this country gave me. I ran for Congress and with you by my side, I made it there. And now I proudly am the first LGBTQ immigrant to serve in Congress.
But my work is not even close to being done, and there is so much left for us to fight for.
With you by my side, I know we can make this country a better place. Thank you for being a part of this team and listening to my story.
