Dear Friends,

It's now March, which means that SNAP Emergency Allotments (EAs) have officially ended. This month is the first month that EAs will not be distributed. SNAP participants will now receive only one payment, their “normal” SNAP amount, in the first half of the month. This change means that 30% of Philadelphia residents will have less to spend on groceries, at a time when grocery prices are still very high.

We understand how difficult this loss of benefits will be for SNAP participants, and we know that there is a lot of confusion about what the ending of EAs means. We have been busy spreading the word, including interviews our team completed with NBC10 and Telemundo, but we could use your help! If people in your network have questions about this change, please refer them to our resources:

Policy & Advocacy

Summer Meals Program: Nutritional Development Services is looking for community members to host 2023 summer meal sites, where they can provide free, nutritious meals to kids 18 and under. Sites can be hosted at a variety of locations, are free to host, and can run for as little as one week or as long as the whole summer (June 14 - August 25).

Tax Season is Here Again: Filing your taxes correctly and on time is important to ensure that, if you are eligible, you receive your full refund, including any tax credits that you qualify for. The Campaign for Working Families is committed to helping families and individuals achieve economic empowerment, and can help you file your taxes for free.

Food Pantries & Soup Kitchens

The Coalition Against Hunger's first VIP Pantry Tour took place on Wednesday, March 8th at Mizpah SDA Food Pantry located in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. In addition to networking with one another, food pantry and soup kitchen leaders from around the Philadelphia area had the chance to learn how Mizpah resources and distributes food as well as items like clothing and house goods, partners with their community and meets the challenges that arise. These tours will occur on a quarterly basis at different pantries across the city. Thank you to Vernessa Wilson, Mizpah SDA’s Community Services Director; Pastor Howard Duncan; and the rest of Mizpah’s dedicated team of volunteers who welcomed us all so warmly to their space!

SNAP Hotline In Action

A client received a letter stating that her SNAP benefits were in suspension because she hadn't completed a Semi-Annual Renewal (SAR) in January. This client hadn't received the paperwork in the mail and had never done a SAR before. She called our Hotline for help. We requested a reconsideration for this client, and she was given until March 12th to complete the paperwork in order to avoid her benefits being closed. We helped this client complete the SAR and sent it to the County Assistance Office. It was quickly approved, and our client was given retroactive benefits for January and February, when her benefits had been in suspension.

As you can see, applying for and keeping one's SNAP benefits can be complicated at times. That is why our SNAP Hotline is here to help!

Come See Us Out in the Community!

Caregivers of students attending the Paul L. Dunbar School (located at 1750 N 12th St, Philadelphia, PA 19122) are welcomed and encouraged to attend their workshop on SNAP benefits to learn about resources available for students and family members. The workshop will be held on Thursday 3/16 from 7:45-8:45 am, check in at the front desk.
