I have worked at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) since November of 2015 as the Administrator of the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston. For the previous 16 years, I had worked as a County Veterans Service Officer in Houston County, Minnesota. As an Army Veteran myself (1st Cav DIV 1995-1999), as well as being the brother, son and grandson of Veterans, the importance of honoring our military and our Veterans was already firmly planted in both my mind and my heart.
Although very happy in my previous job, I could not miss the opportunity to stand up the new Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery - Preston and ensure all Veterans and their families received the highest level of care possible. It also allowed me to honor a promise made several years earlier to my grandfather, a World War II Veteran that passed in 2008. At his graveside service, due to an error by the funeral home, there were no honors present, no flag was folded and no Taps played. Standing near his grave that day, I made a promise to ensure no Veteran or family would experience that again. For the last seven years I can honestly say this amazing team has kept that promise every single service, and to every single family who puts their trust in the State Veterans Cemetery.
As a husband and a father of two amazing young ladies, working for MDVA has allowed me both the security and flexibility needed by a parent and husband to be an active participant in their lives, sports, school functions and vacations. I have a strong family first mentality and adopted that same mentality at work as a supervisor and I see that reflected from my senior leadership and from my team.
It has been a true honor for me to continue to serve those who answered the nation?s call to service, and to their families. I would encourage anyone considering a career change to look no further than MDVA!
