*Legislative Update 3.10.23
*
Dear Friends,
It has been another busy week in St. Paul! The House Republicans announced a tax plan that would return over $13 billion to the taxpayers over two years, the plastic water bottle ban gained traction in the Senate, and a bipartisan infrastructure bill passed the House. Read more about each of these topics below:
Republican Tax Plan
House Republicans introduced our ?Give it Back? tax plan that would return over $13 billion in tax relief over two years.
Some highlights of the plan include:
* Fully eliminating the tax on Social Security
* A one-time child tax credit that would be available for two years
* Slashing the first tax bracket by 1%
* Slashing the second tax bracket by 1%
* An adjustment?of the homestead market value exclusion would give $35?million?a year.
With an $18 billion surplus, the time to relieve the tax burden on Minnesotans is now. I?m proud to work with House Republicans who continue to work to return our surplus to the taxpayers.
Banning Plastic Water Bottles
You may have heard of HF 1857 [ [link removed] ], a bill that says ?A manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer is prohibited from selling or offering for sale bottled water in Minnesota.? Many said that this bill was performative, wasn?t serious, and wouldn?t go anywhere, but this bill is actually moving in the Legislature!
Senator Morrison introduced SF 2791, the Senate companion to this bill. Rep. Jordan was able to find a coauthor and this bill now stands ready to be heard in committee.
Infrastructure Bill
This week, the House passed a bipartisan infrastructure bill. HF 669 [ [link removed] ] is a bonding bill that contains critical projects for our community and, while I would prefer not to borrow money in a time of a surplus, I believe that it is essential to support our community?s projects, as well as projects in other areas in Minnesota that cannot wait another year for aid. There are entire neighborhoods in MN that are only able to drink bottled water and are showering in possibly dangerous water that have been waiting for much-needed help for quite some time.? And unfortunately, due to how the DFL is managing this legislative session, this was likely my only opportunity support these needed projects.??
?
I am absolutely in favor of giving refunds from the surplus back to Minnesotans. The House Republicans introduced our tax relief proposal mentioned above that includes surplus refunds of up to $2500 per family, an $1800 per child tax credit,? eliminates the Social Security tax, decreases the lowest two income tax brackets by 1%, and increases property tax refunds. I will keep fighting to return the surplus to Minnesotans, provide permanent, ongoing tax relief, and supporting critical infrastructure projects throughout our state.
