Step inside Lavender House, and you’ll be greeted warmly by the smiling face of Amina Hassan, a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) health promoter. Amina’s job is to link survivors of sexual violence with MSF’s free medical and mental healthcare services.
"Our patients are always the center of everything," Amina told me when I recently had the chance to visit Lavender House in Nairobi, Kenya. "The patient-centered care is very important for them to feel that they are safe here with MSF, safe with us."
Survivors of sexual violence deserve access to free, comprehensive, and nonjudgmental medical and psychological care. MSF is committed to providing this vital lifeline to women and survivors across the globe, particularly in places where support for survivors is scarce.
In my work as an OB-GYN, I have seen first-hand how sexual and gender-based violence is a medical emergency. It’s a crisis that often increases in unstable situations such as armed conflicts and political upheaval. It leaves survivors with long-lasting consequences, including physical and psychological health risks.
In 2021 alone, MSF provided medical care to 34,800 survivors of sexual violence around the world, and we’re not slowing down. At Lavender House, I saw how dedicated MSF staff work each day to break stigmas around sexual violence, provide patients with medical attention, and raise awareness about the importance of early medical intervention.
MSF’s commitment to women and girls—and to all survivors of sexual and gender-based violence—is unwavering. By being an MSF supporter, you are helping every survivor we work with—and a world where every survivor can access the care they need.
Thank you for being such a critical part of this work.
Sincerely,
Dr. Africa Stewart
