Positive Vs. Negative Ads in Competitive Senate Races

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

March 3, 2023

Democrats had a remarkable performance in 2022 competitive Senate races in large part because of winning among independents. Cook Political Report editor Amy Walter has posed a theory in a recent tweet: "How were Sen[ate] Dems able to avoid the drag of [an] unpopular President? One reason may be that they massively outspent Republicans on positive political ads." Walter Conducted an experiment using campaign ad tracking to categorize ads by candidates wand allies as negative, positive, or contrast (which she counted as negative). Races that she analyzed were Democratic Senate incumbents in AZ, NV, NH, and GA. The chart compares total ad spending by Senate campaigns, coordinated and outside groups on behalf of Senate candidates. WG Discussion Points, March 3, 2023
