Dear John, Americans' trust in news media has collapsed to the lowest level in the world (we're tied with Slovakia). Chances are, you are one of those Americans. Your frustration is warranted. Legacy media outlets have long failed the American public. That's a problem. Without knowledge, action is blind. A healthy Democracy requires an informed citizenry. With your support, NumbersUSA can empower millions more Americans with the truth about immigration policy.
Consider this headline from CNN on February 21st: "Biden administration rolls out new asylum restrictions mirroring Trump-era policy." Sounds interesting - only, upon closer inspection (or any kind of inspection!), the rule doesn't seem designed to restrict legitimate or fraudulent asylum claims at all. The proposed rule contains a nugget of common sense: migrants who pass through a country where they could have sought asylum before reaching the United States, will not be released into the U.S. That would be a sound policy that would discourage "asylum shopping" and fraud. But NumbersUSA did something reporters on Twitter apparently did not: we actually read the proposed rule. The exceptions to the rule include…well, just about anyone you can think of, including:
In short, the rule assumes there are two kinds of people in this world - those with smartphones and those without - and both groups are excluded from the rule. Heads, I win; tails, you lose. The rule includes numerous additional exceptions but they are almost beside the point since everyone on earth either has a phone or doesn't. The rule actually creates a new way for people to exploit our porous and overwhelmed asylum system.
You and I already know more about this rule than a majority of our fellow Americans, including those who work in the media or in Congress. What is that worth to you? Sadly, this failure in the legacy media is nothing new. In my 15 years of monitoring immigration coverage, I've come to expect a topsy-turvy spin that flips reality on its head. Do you remember either of these examples of media malpractice?
Over 7 million people rely on NumbersUSA for the facts. We need millions more to join us to drive effective changes in policy. There is power in numbers as well as in knowledge. I hope our media institutions can improve. I truly do. But they have to earn my trust. NumbersUSA has earned my trust, and if you feel the same I hope you will pitch in what you can to help NumbersUSA bring the facts to the people.
