Thursday, March 9, 2023 | The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From
Health Affairs

Dear John,

In a peer-reviewed article published in Wiley Learned Publishing, Health
Affairs' Director Of Health Equity Vabren Watts and others from the team
detail Health Affairs' journey to advance racial equity in scholarly
publishing <[link removed]>

Vabren also provides an update in Forefront today about our commitment

Community-Based Outbreak Response

Several articles in the March issue
<[link removed]>
focus on lessons learned regarding public health during the COVID-19
pandemic.

In one paper, Shefali Oza and coauthors argue that future pandemics
should be addressed through the use of a Community-based Outbreak
Investigation and Response (COIR) framework
<[link removed]>.

COIR integrates effective surveillance and a coordinated response by
community partners with emphasis on building trust and achieving equity.

Effective implementation of COIR depends upon adequate and sustainable
funding, a diverse and COIR-trained workforce, local data surveillance,
and information sharing.

The authors emphasize that the COIR model's potential reaches far
beyond COVID-19 and would add value in efforts to address other
infectious diseases, opioid addiction, and illnesses related to
environmental pollution.

through research and practice at Health Affairs. Our goals for the
project, which began in 2020 and launched with funding from the Colorado
Health Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, are to:

* Ensure racial/ethnic diversity of journal authors and reviewers

* Increase the quality and quantity of published content on racial
health equity

* Address our own biases as part of the publishing enterprise

* Lead transformation in improving racial equity alongside other
health-associated journals

In a peer-reviewed article published in Wiley Learned Publishing,
Director Of Health Equity Vabren Watts and others from the Health
Affairs team shared insights about the journey to advance racial equity
in scholarly publishing
