Come celebrate the legacy of Southern Exposure!

There's still time to register for our special celebration of Southern Exposure magazine this Saturday, March 11, at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Southern Exposure was the award-winning journal published from 1973 to 2011 by the Institute for Southern Studies, publisher of Facing South. "Pages from the Movements for Justice: Southern Exposure at 50" will feature the founders of Southern Exposure discussing the magazine's roots in social change movements and impact on our understanding of the South, as well as writers and historians reflecting on the publication's legacy and meaning today.

The free event at UNC's Wilson Library is a collaboration between the Institute for Southern Studies, UNC's Southern Historical Collection and North Carolina Collection, and the Center for the Study of the American South.

This week on Facing South, the Institute unveiled a first installment of the Southern Exposure digital archive, a searchable collection of full issues and key articles of the journal. The first installment covers issues from 1973 to 1981; under the leadership of archive editor Olivia Paschal, the Institute will roll out additional archive installments over the course of the year.

Please register as soon as possible if you are interested in attending the Saturday afternoon program. Won't be able to attend in person? You can also register here to view the event via Zoom. Questions? Email us at [email protected].
