Startling truths might surprise you

Jack, did you know one hundred human generations can come and go in the lifetime of a giant sequoia? The oldest giant sequoia is over 3,000 years old — withstanding fires, blizzards, floods and even earthquakes.

This forest ecosystem has thrived on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada – and only here – through millions of years of stability. Now, on our watch, the trajectory of this extraordinary ecosystem has taken a drastic and devastating turn.

Save the Redwoods League has long invested in the future of the giant sequoia. As threats escalate, we’re ramping up our efforts. [[link removed]]

I find that even for those with a lifelong familiarity with the giant sequoia, the following facts can feel shocking:

* There are only 80 giant sequoia groves in the world, which harbor the world’s largest (and some of the oldest) trees.
* These 80 groves thrive in only 26,000 acres of the forest, a space just a little smaller than San Francisco.
* In 2020 and 2021 alone, nearly 20% of the remaining population of old-growth giant sequoias was destroyed in wildfire
