ICYMI: Here are a few of the key takeaways from the event:
★ Arekia shared a success story from Mississippi Votes 2018 campus organizing: leveraging new technologies and the power of young people to increase voter turnout 300% from the 2014 midterms.
★ In Mississippi, there is a legacy of Black activists showing up with love and passion for organizing. Arekia spoke of the generations of Black activists who came before, who continue to inspire her and others to build Black political power, no matter how hard the road gets.
★ Ahead of the 2023 gubernatorial election, Mississippi Votes is getting ready to deploy organizers across the state to educate and activate youth and Black voters.
Central to our discussion was the decades of investment from conservatives that won them power and what that means in our fight for justice now, not just in MS but across the country. We can’t move forward without the work of Mississippi Votes and other organizations on the ground building sustainable local infrastructure in the face of constant attacks on civil and human rights.
Our collective organizing is powerful – I say “our” because you are a part of this power. Even if you aren’t in Mississippi, you can help provide the additional support and resources to increase the impact on the ground.
Groundwork is in constant communication with Mississippi Votes and other organizations on the ground. We will be sure to share ways you can help on Instagram. If you haven’t already, be sure to follow us here so you don’t miss an action. [[link removed]]
It was an honor to host this week’s discussion with Mississippi Votes. I hope you found it as informative and inspiring as I did. Let’s make sure the spotlight stays on all the things happening in the state.
More soon,
Anthony
