Imagine finding vile, hateful propaganda on a flier in your driveway or on posters plastered to a light pole you pass on your way to work. This is the increasingly common reality for people across the country. White supremacists and antisemites have significantly stepped up their use of propaganda as a tactic to terrorize and harass people across the U.S., according to a new ADL assessment. Every state but Hawaii was hit by at least one incident, and the number of cases reported was the highest ADL has ever recorded.

White Supremacist Propaganda Assessment just released by the ADL Center on Extremism covers a 38% increase in white supremacist propaganda activity during 2022. Incidents include the distribution of racist, antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ+ messages on fliers left furtively on doorsteps, on banners dropped from highway overpasses, scrawled as graffiti on campus walls, posted as stickers on lampposts on city streets and flashed as laser projections on high-profile buildings.

In addition to the overall increase of 38%, 2022 also saw antisemitic propaganda more than double. However, for the third straight year, the number of propaganda incidents on campus decreased.

Three white supremacist groups — Patriot Front, Goyim Defense League (GDL) and White Lives Matter — were responsible for most of the activity. The GDL, which seeks to expel Jews from America, was largely responsible for the massive uptick in antisemitic propaganda. They spread antisemitic myths and conspiracy theories in hopes of turning the country against the Jewish people.
How You Can Take Action
With white supremacists stepping up their efforts to intimidate those who don’t align with their twisted worldview, we must recommit ourselves to the fight against hate and say, ‘Enough is enough.’
If you witness antisemitic or extremist propaganda in your community, ADL recommends that you:
- Report it to law enforcement immediately if you feel that you may be in danger. Do not confront individuals who may be protesting or spreading propaganda. Contact law enforcement to report trespassing, vandalism or harassment if any of these activities occur on your property.

Report it to ADL using our Incident Response reporting tool so we can review it, respond and where appropriate, work with law enforcement.

ADL’s regional offices are here to support you and your community following propaganda distributions or for any other matters relating to extremism, hate or bias.
White supremacist propaganda helps to recruit extremists and can be a stepping stone to violent activity. Law enforcement agencies must be prepared to deal with this threat.

We need a whole-of-society approach to combat this challenge, including elected officials, community leaders and people of good faith coming together and condemning extremist propaganda forcefully.
