Biden must not resurrect family detention

We call on the Biden administration to put families' lives and legal rights first, as shocking new reports show the president is considering detaining asylum seeking families.

NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy responded, saying the president has a choice to "outdo his predecessor or respect the human rights of immigrants and asylum seekers." We remember the horrors of family detention and we'll fight back to ensure family detention never happens again. Read our official statement here.

Proposed ban limits asylum seekers' access to safety

NIJC condemns the new proposed rule to limit access to asylum for people arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. People fleeing persecution are ensured access to protection by international and U.S. law.  Read our statement responding to the proposed ban.

IN THE NEWS:  NIJC's Keren Zwick spoke to NBC about the ban and warned that we are prepared to challenge it in court, just like we did with the Trump-era rules.

TAKE ACTION: Help us tell President Biden to not revive the Trump-era asylum ban. Add your comment to our form to share how hurtful this policy is for individuals and families seeking safety.

NIJC proudly joined the ACLU and other groups in telling the Biden administration to end the 287g program that allows local police to help federal immigration authorities in detentions and deportations.  Read more about 287g's harmful impact and the call to end it.

Felipe's family reunites!

We're happy to share that Felipe and his parents are finally together and free from detention after being separated for more than eight months by U.S. immigration officials! Nearly 1,000 people signed the petition and NIJC staff put in hundreds of hours to reunite this family. We’re so grateful for your support to make this possible. Send Felipe's family well wishes and celebrate this cherished moment on our Instagram post.
