CDF Freedom Schools® Bring Out the Joy in Reading

Dr. Wilson at Martin Luther King, Jr. Science Academy. Sacramento, CA 2022.

Dear John,

Children’s Defense Fund joins in celebration to kick off this month’s National Reading Month. CDF Freedom Schools® sites across the country provide K-12 scholars with rich, culturally relevant books that deepen scholars’ understanding of themselves and foster a love and joy for reading.

This month, we’re featuring books from the CDF Freedom Schools Integrated Reading Curriculum in our Banned Book Syllabus: Banned Books We Love. CDF Freedom Schools’ Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) features books that represent students and their diverse backgrounds. IRC books showcase vibrant illustrations of powerful Black and Brown civil rights leaders and other engaging stories that scholars can see themselves in. CDF Freedom Schools Ella Baker Trainer Charity Bickcom has experienced firsthand the positive effect this has in the classroom.

Since 2022, approximately 95% of scholars’ parents saw increased reading confidence in their children. The CDF Freedom Schools program provides support for scholars to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference in themselves and their families, schools, communities, country, and world with hope, education and action.
