As funny as it is, the disconnect is disturbing, showing just how removed right-wing politicians are from the real-world consequences of their legislation and how alienated they are from the people they're hurting. The performer in question, Franklyn Clur, says that “I hope he can extend that kindness by trying to make sure no bills are passed to hurt anyone like me.”

Tennessee Republicans have passed a bill that would tell county clerks they “shall not be required to solemnize a marriage if the person has an objection to solemnizing the marriage based on the person’s conscience or religious beliefs." This is meant to deny gay marriages but could even be used to block interracial marriage, which not a few Republicans have expressed interest in doing.
