Dear Supporter:
Late last year, I heard something that really stuck with me.
It came from the most recent report by climate scientists. In it, they said that there is "no credible pathway" to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.1
I was devastated when I read that. For decades, we've all known that preventing extreme climate disasters means limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
But you and I didn't come to the Sierra Club to be discouraged. We're here because we want to make a difference. And I personally believe that you (and other Sierra Club members) are our planet's best hope.
That's why I'm so excited to share with you a special offer that has the power to make this coming Earth Day truly transformative:
For the next 48 hours, make a gift of just $5 to the Sierra Club and we'll add your gift to our Earth Day matching gift pool. That means your $5 gift today will be MATCHED with a future donor on Earth Day, effectively DOUBLING your impact and helping us to expand our membership
dramatically. You'll also get our FREE Sierra Club Clay Mug with any gift of $15 or more!
We've set a goal of raising $50,000 by MIDNIGHT on Friday to fund our Earth Day 2023 match.
And in case you wanted another reason why it's so important that we hit that goal: House Republicans just released a flurry of legislation that would bind our nation to dated, toxic fossil fuels.
Their proposals would roll back methane regulations, handcuff the President from stopping fracking, streamline approvals for new gas pipelines, and restrict the public's ability to speak out against climate-destructive fossil fuel projects.
Stopping House Republicans' efforts and accelerating our nation towards a climate-safe future will take a bigger and stronger Sierra Club.
Our next best shot at dramatically growing our ranks is Earth Day. And my friends in the membership department tell me we need to fully fund our matching gift pool to inspire folks on the sidelines to do more and join the Sierra Club.
Will you help us fight the climate crisis, save species, AND grow our membership by making a gift before our deadline on Friday at MIDNIGHT? For just the next 48 hours, your gift of $5 will be included in our $50,000 Earth Day matching gift fund, effectively DOUBLING your impact!
One of my early lessons as an organizer came from Dr. Martin Luther King, who said, "If you are comfortable in your coalition, then your coalition is too small."2
And we've stayed uncomfortable here at the Sierra Club. Pushing to do more, to be better, especially when it comes to fighting poverty and racism. Because the truth is, these are our greatest obstacles to saving the planet.
Poverty is why my neighbors in West Virginia historically would vote to support politicians who they knew would blow up the mountains they loved and dump them into the streams they loved — because they needed those coal-extraction jobs. And racism helps to ensure poverty, which keeps people desperate in making bad decisions about the future of the planet.3
Donate today and help super-charge the Sierra Club's membership to reach new communities and tackle every challenge threatening our planet. Your support will not only power our work to save our environment, but you'll inspire a new generation of members to join the Sierra Club as we face our greatest challenge yet.
I came to the Sierra Club to do big things. And right now, our planet is crying out for bigger changes from all of us.
I hope you'll respond today to "Be the Match" and be the reason someone decides to finally join in and become a member of the Sierra Club.
Thanks for all your support, it means a lot to me.

P.S. Say YES today, and "Be the Match" to someone who needs that extra push to do more this coming Earth Day. And remember, we've got a FREE Sierra Club Clay Mug with your name on it with a gift of $15 or more.
