We’ve been back in Parliament this week holding the Government to
account and promoting National’s policies for the future.
Christopher Luxon gave his State of the Nation Speech at the
weekend and announced our FamilyBoost policy. This policy will help
ease childcare costs for young families grappling with the cost of
living crisis, and will be paid for by stopping wasteful spending on
consultants. You can read more about this policy below.
I'm looking forward to hosting Dr. Shane Reti in Ōhāriu on the 22nd
of March for a public meeting on New Zealand's struggling health
service. It would be great to see you at The Village Church,
Khandallah at 7:00 pm.
Read on for updates on my work inside and outside of
Parliament.
Ōhāriu fundraiser
On Wednesday 5th April I will be hosting a dinner alongside
National Party Leader Christopher Luxon. We want to change the
Government this year and turn Ōhāriu blue and we need your help.
Further details are above.

FamilyBoost
I'm very proud of the FamilyBoost policy National designed and
launched last weekend: reducing the cost of childcare by delivering
families a tax rebate of up to $75 a week, offsetting the costs
parents face when they’re working and hopefully making it easier for
Mums and Dads to manage the juggle and cope with the rising cost of
living.
National won’t pay for it by just adding more spending to the
inflation fire: instead, we’ll cut $400m from the amount Government
spends on expensive consultants. This is an item of spending that has
exploded in the past five years, leaping from $1.2B to $1.7B, and much
of it wasted on go-nowhere projects like the failed TVNZ-RNZ merger,
the ridiculous proposal for a cycle bridge over the Auckland harbour,
and the fatally flawed Three Waters proposals. National will restore
careful monitoring, accountability and oversight of Government-wide
consultancy spending.
New Zealand Economics Forum 2023
Last week I had the privilege to address some of New Zealand's
leading minds at the New Zealand Economics Forum hosted at Waikato
University. I discussed the challenges facing our economy and shared
National’s plans for reducing the cost of living and lifting incomes
for all. You can watch or read my full speech below:
App Tax
Did you know that Labour is planning a new “App Tax” that will
pump-up the cost of services provided over Apps – such as Zoomy,
DeliverEasy and Airbnb?
The Government has introduced a new law that removes the
longstanding rule that those selling less than $60,000 worth of a
product or service don’t have to pay GST. Labour have decided to
remove that tax exemption if drivers, delivery agent or host use apps
to reach their customers. It’s unfair and the IRD says it will lift
the cost of the digital services you use by up to 15%. It’s yet
another extra cost that Kiwis can’t afford in a cost of living
crisis.
My view is that all sellers should receive the same tax treatment
whether they use an app or not – that includes being required to pay
GST if they sell more than $60,000 worth of rides or accommodation
stays for example, but being exempt if their total sales are less than
that. The reality is many Zoomy drivers and the like are doing the
work as a side hustle and only bring in small amounts of income. It
doesn’t make sense to be slamming the little guys yet again. Let’s
also remember many of these apps are Kiwi-owned – I for one to see New
Zealand companies doing more digital innovation – not less.
National opposes the App tax and if elected we will reverse it.
Victoria University Clubs Day
It was great to have Christopher Luxon with us at the NZ Young Nats
stand at Vic Uni last week. Heaps of interest in National’s plans to
reduce the cost of living and lift incomes for all.
Malvina Major Retirement Home
I enjoyed speaking at Malvina Major Retirement Village in
Johnsonville last week. Even met my husband’s former music teacher and
talked with my former science teacher. Thank you to the lovely staff
and residents for having me.
Bluegreens Forum
I always look forward to National's Bluegreens Forum, and this year
was no different. We had some excellent discussions about mitigating
and adapting to climate change and protecting our environment.
Christopher Luxon also launched National's Local Water Done Well
policy - our alternative to Labour's failed Three Waters reforms. You
can read the details of this policy below:
