Happy International Women's Day!

One month, one day, or one email isn't nearly enough time to celebrate all the women who shattered glass ceilings and broke barriers to bring us to where we are now. But, in honor of today, we want to highlight just some of the trailblazing women of Washington. From activists to athletes to teachers to artists … here are their stories:
 
Women of Washington – Princess Angeline (1820-1896): A symbol of Indigenous resilience. – Emma Smith DeVoe & Mary Arkwright Hutton: Fought for WA to become the 5th state to grant women the right to vote in 1910. – Thelma Fisher DeWitty: One of the first Black teachers hired by Seattle Public Schools in 1947. – Patricia Bostrom: Greatest women's tennis player in UW history & PAC-8 singles champion in 1972. A pioneer for gender equity in college sports. – Ruby Chow: First AAPI woman elected to King County Council in 1974. – Dixy Lee Ray: First woman elected as WA's Governor in 1976. – Patty Murray: First woman elected to the US Senate from WA in 1992. – Sally Jewel: Second woman to serve as the US Secretary of the Interior from 2013-2017. – Ana Mari Cauce: First woman, Hispanic, and openly LGBTQ+ President of UW appointed in 2015. #GoHuskies – Ijeoma Oluo: Activist and author of No.1 NY Times bestseller - So You Want To Talk About Race - published in 2018. – Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe: 4x WNBA Champion and 5x Olympic Champion & 2x FIFA World Cup Champion, Olympic Gold medalist, and Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient #PowerCouple – Brandi Carlile: 9x Grammy winning singer-songwriter & advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Despite these monumental achievements, International Women's Day serves as a reminder that we must do more to achieve gender equity. We are fortunate to be standing on the shoulders of giants as we continue the fight towards progress.
