Commissioner's Column

Today I wanted to share two important updates, one about charity advocacy and the other about progress on reducing fundraising red tape.

Earlier this week, we published information for charities that want to be involved in the planned referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament – you can find it on our website, and I promise it is a quick read. We recognise that advocacy is an activity that often helps charities achieve their purpose. Charities can and do advocate.

Answering your questions

A few of the most common questions we have been hearing from charities recently...

Q.  My charity just appointed new Responsible People to its board. What do we need to do now?

A. When changes are made to your charity’s Responsible People (RPs), you need to ensure that you update the list of RPs with the ACNC via the Charity Portal. The size of your charity will dictate the timeframes for reporting these changes.

New RPs should also set themselves up with a Charity Portal account and log in regularly to ensure they can continue to access it. Making sure you have access to the Portal, prior to peak charity reporting periods, will ensure you can complete your charity’s reporting easily.

We also encourage RPs to sign up to the mailing list for our monthly e-newsletter ‘The Charitable Purpose’. You can sign up using your personal email address here.

Q. Can I share my login details for the Charity Portal with other people in my charity?

A. Each user has their own login for the Charity Portal. There isn’t a charity account for people to share with each other.

You can
reset your password at the login screen. And if you need to create an account, you can do so at the login screen. There is more information available here if you need it.

You must log in with your own personal account to make any changes to your charity’s details, as well as when you submit your charity’s Annual Information Statement.

We register hundreds of new charities every month. You can view the list of newly registered charities by clicking on the button below.

To remain eligible for registration, charities must meet ongoing obligations.

Each time a Responsible Person (a committee or board member or trustee) commences or resigns from their position, you must notify us. Learn more about notifying the ACNC.

Holding an Annual General Meeting is a good way to be accountable to your members. Read more about AGMs and view our free resources.

In the spirit of reconciliation, the ACNC acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
We pay our respects to them and their cultures and elders past, present and emerging.
