John, wildlife are dying as far as 20 miles away from the toxic East Palestine train derailment— and the community’s stream ecosystems have taken the biggest hit.
While we still don’t know the long-term impact of the derailment on human health, the effects on Ohio’s aquatic animals are lethal. State officials have already tallied the deaths of more than 43,000 fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and other aquatic animals in the month following this ecological disaster.
Experts have weighed in: East Palestine’s streams will be able to recover, but it won’t be quick — and it certainly won't be easy. The only way we can truly prevent any further damage now is by passing stronger regulations preventing companies like Norfolk Southern from shirking around safety standards again.
SEEC Member Rep. Chris Deluzio is already putting in the work to make sure what happened in East Palestine never happens to another community Just last week, he introduced the Decreasing Emergency Railroad Accident Instances Locally (DERAIL) Act to broaden regulations defining high-hazard flammable trains and enforce higher safety standards — and our SEEC PAC team is ready to join his fight.

Thankfully, there weren’t any hazardous chemicals on board this time, but John, this is exactly why we need to pass Rep. Deluzio’s DERAIL Act — we can’t trust big companies to prioritize our environmental safety over their corporate gain.
Our Members are calling for change, but House Republicans have proven time and time again that they’ll bail out corporations at the expense of working families. That’s why we need your grassroots support to get the DERAIL Act signed into law — are you with us? [[link removed]]

One thing is for certain, John: We won’t know the full-spectrum health and environmental repercussions of East Palestine for a while. But given the toll it’s taken on Ohio’s aquatic animals, we know it can’t be good — for us, our pets, our lands, or our water sources.
This is one fight we can’t — and won’t — back down from. Our SEEC Members are leading the fight to stop the gross negligence of corporations like Norfolk Southern, once and for all.
