In the turbulent year of 1966, the words “Black Power” transformed the civil rights movement, ushering out the nonviolent philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis. Journalist and author Mark Whitaker tells the story of the trials and triumphs of that pivotal year in his new book, Saying It Loud: 1966—The Year Black Power Challenged the Civil Rights Movement, and ties together progress made by the movement five decades ago and the work continuing to this day.
The Brennan Center will host a timely conversation with Whitaker and Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist Eugene Robinson on Tuesday, March 14, at 6 p.m. ET about the book and how it overlaps with the tireless fight for voting rights. The premiere of this recorded conversation will include a live YouTube text chat Q&A with Whitaker.
