Governor Josh Shapiro's Budget Address
|
Yesterday Governor Josh Shapiro spoke to the General Assembly to give his first budget address and present his proposals and ideas for the 2023/2024 budget. The Governor's budget included outlines to increase the minimum wage, lower the corporate net income tax, and most importantly build an economy that works for everyone. While explaining his budget, Governor Shapiro mentioned an important equation to keep in mind. 102 + 26 + 1. A majority of 102 House members, a majority of 26 senators, and 1 governor is all that is needed to pass a budget. But with a divided Assembly that is no easy feat without working together.
In total, the budget proposal is $44.4 billion, about a 3.5 - 4% increase across all funds and sources from last year's budget and if enacted, would still retain the billions of dollars in surplus in our Rainy Day Fund. This is a realistic, commonsense budget proposal that works for working families, schools, nurses, teachers, and our police officers. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I'm excited to get to work and participate in the upcoming budget meetings that will begin later this month. I will of course keep you updated on budget proceedings through the hearing process and as we get closer to our end of June deadline.
