John,
THE SOAPBOX seeks to keep you connected to what’s happening at The Union and share news about our work to oppose anti-democratic forces in America.

STATE OF THE UNION: The Union is all-in leading up to the April 4 general election for a single seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Pro-democracy champion Janet Protasiewicz faces anti-democracy, election denier Daniel Kelly for what may be the most consequential election in 2023 anywhere in the country. A Protasiewicz win will flip the court to a pro-democracy 4 to 3 majority enabling it to begin reversing the terrible decisions the court has made.
A pro-democracy majority on the Court would:
- Protect and ensure the results of Wisconsin’s free and fair 2024 elections
- Protect and preserve voting rights
- Strengthen democracy by dealing with Wisconsin’s extreme gerrymandering
- Restore balance and reasonableness to laws regarding women’s healthcare.

Join us on the road in Wisconsin: Volunteers with The Union will be on the road, in-person and virtually, next week to turn out the vote for the upcoming April 4 general election. We’ll be canvassing neighborhoods in Madison (March 16), Ripon (March 17), and Milwaukee (March 18). Virtual get-out-the-vote events will complement these efforts. Be sure to review options on our Action Center.
You’re invited to our Democracy Town Hall: On Saturday, March 18, we’ll meet in Milwaukee, and virtually, to talk about the stakes involved in the April 4 election and learn from activists on the frontlines of the struggle to protect democracy. The topics include:
- Protecting our freedoms: Pitched legal battles are underway to protect democracy and the stakes couldn’t be higher for the Wisconsin Supreme Court election.
- Advancing our communities: The battle to protect democracy is important to everyone, but many disadvantaged people and communities are especially vulnerable.
- Strengthening our democracy: There are many strategies and tactics available in the battle to protect democracy.
Our opportunity to reverse autocracy in Wisconsin: More than $10 million has already been spent, and millions more continue to flood the state ahead of the April 5 supreme court general election. Grassroots pro-democracy advocates face a daunting challenge to win the seat that will likely decide the future of voting rights, redistricting, and access to critical healthcare for women.
The biggest election of 2023 reaches the final sprint

Any doubt about the importance of our work in Wisconsin and what will come later? Read on, we are all needed in this struggle.
THE PLAYBOOK: State election officials, lawmakers, and pro-democracy advocates from battleground states are leading a new push against Trump and his cult of extremists. These leaders are playing offense against election deniers to protect voting and other rights essential to our democracy. The group has released a new playbook for democracy.
Pushing back against election deniers
THE PULSE: Pro-democracy candidates across the country defied many odds and performed better than expected in the 2022 midterms. Now, in 2023 there are encouraging results from some early contests about voter preferences for democracy. Voters are pushing-back against autocracy despite new threats to voting rights.
Encouraging signals in the struggle for democracy
Unprecedented assaults on democracy: Anti-democracy state legislators have been busier than ever this year. So far, lawmakers in 32 states have pre-filed or introduced more than 150 measures that would make it harder for eligible Americans to register, stay on the voter rolls, or vote as compared to existing state law. This activity far outpaces similar activity from prior legislative sessions.

Election conspiracists are undermining election security: A behind-the-scenes but critical part of combatting election fraud is being attacked by election conspiracists claiming our elections are not secure. The Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) is a non-profit organization with the sole mission of assisting states to improve the accuracy of America’s voter rolls. Now the ERIC finds itself in the crosshairs of the Trump-cult.
Election integrity is being threatened by the Trump-cult
Trump’s own researchers failed to find election fraud: Shocking no one, Donald Trump continued to lie about the 2020 election during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference last weekend. News stories last month revealed that research paid for by Trump’s campaign in late 2020 failed to find any proof of election fraud before Trump incited the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Trump knew before Jan. 6 that there was no election fraud
