Dear MoveOn member,

Today is International Women's Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of
the achievements of women. But as we take stock of the moment we are in,
today cannot be just a celebration—it must also be a call to action.

special-edition "Roe Is the Floor, Not the Ceiling" shirt from MoveOn
today.

Since last year's International Women's Day, the right-wing Supreme Court
ended the right to legal abortion in America, and women, girls, trans, and
gender nonconforming people in the United States have lost their rights to
bodily autonomy.

In the months since that decision, 18 states have banned abortion, and six
more are attempting to do the same.^1

Just last week, Walgreens, the nation's second-largest pharmacy, announced
that it would bow to Republican pressure and stop dispensing the pills
used in medication abortions at their stores in 20 states—including at
least four states where abortion remains legal.^2

And as you read this email, we are awaiting a ruling from an extremist
judge in Texas who may attempt to ban mifepristone, one of the two safe
and effective drugs used in medication abortions and to treat many
miscarriages, nationwide.^3

While this news has been frightening and infuriating, there is still
reason to hope—because every time abortion is on the ballot, we win.

We defended access to abortion in all five states that put it on the
ballot in 2022, and we will do it again and again and again until our
rights are protected in every state across the country.

Why do we say that Roe is the floor, not the ceiling?

Because while Roe kept abortion legal, that did not make it accessible to
everyone who needed it—particularly Indigenous people and people of color,
poor communities, and trans and gender-nonconforming people.

In the years after Roe was decided, Republicans began plotting how to work
around the decision with regulations called "TRAP laws," which put
ridiculous and unnecessary restrictions on abortion clinics in an effort
to shut them down.^4

In addition, the Hyde Amendment blocks Medicaid from covering abortion
services, further restricting access to marginalized communities.^5

And so many other outrageous state-level restrictions, from requirements
that health providers read medically inaccurate and demeaning information
to patients seeking abortions to burdensome and impossible waiting
periods, put abortion out of reach for marginalized communities.

These restrictions were already unacceptable before the fall of Roe, and
as we work to restore abortion rights across the country we must remove
these barriers to care as well.

Here is the harsh truth: Wealthy people (including the wives, daughters,
and mistresses of Republican politicians) will always be able to access
abortion, and the forced-birth extremists behind these laws know that.
They know that abortion bans will never affect them.

But they do affect each and every one of us, which is why we must continue
to work together as a movement to fight back and restore our rights.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Voters just defied history and stopped a
MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end
the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms,
our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but
only if we work together.

Will you chip in right now to power our critical work?
