Folks,

Today is International Women’s Day, and I’m commemorating the day by thinking about the legacy of Montana women.

When you grow up in Montana, you learn from an early age that hard work is hard work, and respect is respect, no matter your gender. Equality and independence are steadfast Montana values.

Montana has a long, proud history of equal rights. Montana women had the right to vote before the rest of the country followed suit. Jeannette Rankin, the very first woman to serve in Congress, was elected in Montana in 1916.

Montana women are hardworking women. I see that every day with my wife, Sharla. We’re an equal team — she will be right out there with me next month as planting season begins.

And I know that in every field (literally and figuratively), women deserve equality.

In Montana, the average woman makes 81 cents on the dollar compared to her male counterparts. We’ve made a lot of progress addressing the gender pay gap in the past several years, but our work isn't finished.

Montana women don’t need politicians meddling in their personal healthcare decisions, decisions that should be left private between themselves and their doctors. Ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer, activists have been hard at work trying to roll back the clock on a woman’s right to privacy. I’m not done fighting to enshrine protections for reproductive rights into law for Montanans and women across the country.

There’s still work to be done, but like I said: Montana women are tough and hardworking. I’m standing with them today and every day.

Thanks,

Jon
