The new Congress’s attacks on our climate future have begun.
This month, the new Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives released a series of 17 bills to start their dirty-energy platform – and these bills read like an oil, gas, and coal industry wish list.
The new majority's dirty-energy agenda is extremely concerning. They want to dramatically ramp up fossil fuel production while undermining protections from dangerous fossil fuel pollution.
We need to stop these bills NOW and show the House Republican majority that the American people reject their extreme pro-fossil fuel agenda.
Tell Congress to reject dangerous, short-sighted dirty-energy bills that would turn back the clock on our progress toward our climate and clean energy future.
While the Inflation Reduction Act — the largest climate action in U.S. history — is bringing the U.S. closer to its climate goals, attacks like these are designed to roll back commonsense clean energy projects and keep us dependent on dirty energy far into the future.
These bills were introduced in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where the new majority’s priority appears to be cutting taxes on fossil fuel companies already earning hundreds of billions in windfall profits while you pay more at the pump. While they’re at it, they hope to weaken the nation’s landmark environmental laws that protect Americans from the pollution that comes from burning fossil fuels.
Here are some of the highlights of their dirty-energy plan:
- Promotes More Mining and Drilling by slyly defining almost all kinds of mining and old energy development as “critical minerals” production, and it weakens community, worker safety, and environmental safeguards.
- Cuts Taxes on Polluters by repealing the tax on wasteful methane leaks from gas infrastructure enacted just last year in the Inflation Reduction Act, encouraging companies to ignore leaks that release potent greenhouse gases, pollute the air, and raise consumer energy costs.
- Brings the Keystone XL Pipeline Back From the Dead by reviving the pipeline's cross-border permit that President Biden wisely revoked. Keystone XL was shown to be unable to safely transport the world’s dirtiest oil from Canada through the U.S. for export, communities along the pipeline route, and our climate, with all the risk.
- Undermines Gas Pipeline Safety by weakening the existing environmental review process by stripping regulatory authority from EPA and other environmental agencies and instead giving it to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), an agency without environment and health expertise.
- Undercuts Fundamental Environmental Laws by allowing the EPA to waive any and all environmental protections under the Clean Air Act and Solid Waste Disposal Act for any facility vaguely deemed to be a “critical energy resource.”
Big polluters and their vocal allies in Congress want to block the transition to clean energy by turning back the clock toward weaker environmental laws, boosting the extraction of fossil fuels that drive climate change, and endangering communities across the country, especially disadvantaged communities who often bear the brunt of pollution and health impacts.
With the severity of the climate crisis becoming more apparent every day, we have no more time to waste on dangerous propositions like these.
Tell Congress you reject the House GOP’s extreme pro-fossil fuel agenda.
Thank you again for using your voice to champion climate solutions. Together, I know we can make a difference and stop short-sighted bills like these from becoming law.
Sincerely,
Kevin S. Curtis
