Arise executive director Robyn Hyden spoke to WHNT about Arise's mission and policy priorities. "What we aim to do is make sure the voices of regular folks, working-class people, people who are struggling are at the table," Hyden said.

Alabama Reflector: Alabama grocery tax repeal efforts draw liberal and conservative groups

“This is an issue of fundamental justice. This is an issue that knows no partisan lines,” Arise communications director Chris Sanders told the Alabama Reflector. “Food is not optional. Everyone has to eat to survive, so that means the grocery tax is a tax on survival.”

“Most other states have realized that this policy is unjust, that it’s antiquated, and they’ve responded accordingly," Arise's Chris Sanders said about Alabama's grocery tax. "They’ve eliminated the grocery tax and found other ways to raise revenue for vital public services. We believe it’s time for Alabama to get with the times and do that as well."

 

Alabama Arise: How Alabama can protect health coverage during the Medicaid ‘unwinding’ period

Federal Medicaid coverage protections established during the COVID-19 pandemic are set to expire starting April 1 in a process known as unwinding. “The stakes of unwinding are high,” Arise health policy advocate Jennifer Harris wrote on our blog. “Approximately 61,000 Alabamians may lose their Medicaid coverage during the unwinding period. This could result in a 16% increase in the number of uninsured Alabamians.”

Medicaid expansion is "the single best solution available for lawmakers to strengthen Alabama’s ailing health care system. And it is one of the best solutions to help cure many of our state’s economic and workforce woes," Arise policy analyst Mike Nicholson wrote.

Brewton Standard: Forum focuses on need for expansion of Medicaid

At a public forum in Brewton last week, Arise heard harrowing stories of what failure to expand Medicaid would mean for rural communities across Alabama. “It’s up to you to reach out to lawmakers about why this matters,” Arise organizing director Presdelane Harris said. “Adequate health coverage saves lives, and those who make the decisions need to hear from us.”

 “All Alabamians deserve equal justice under the law,” Arise’s Robyn Hyden told AL.com. “Unfortunately, the Department of Corrections’ internal review of the state’s execution process did not resolve many of the injustices that remain throughout our capital punishment system.”

“We supported this during the previous legislative session. In general, we are supportive of any policy that makes it easier for folks to get their right to vote back," Arise policy analyst Mike Nicholson said of a bill that would make it easier to restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated individuals.
