Here at Fair Fight Action, we’re huge fans of International Women’s Day! It’s a time to honor the work women do every day to create a more just world. Today, we’d like to continue our celebration of Black History Month by showing our deep appreciation for a few of the amazing Black women who have paved the way for the voting rights movement in Georgia.

They’ve marched, they've taken the microphone, they’ve testified, and they’ve even run for office. Take a look for yourself at how these changemakers have been leading the way and making history:

Helen Butler
When it comes to engaging voters in Georgia, voting rights activist Helen Butler has been in the fight for decades. As Executive Director at the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, her work continues to bring together community organizers, policy experts, faith leaders, and more to improve the livelihoods of people of color in Georgia and across the country. She’s a pillar in her community, dedicated to building coalitions and ensuring voter participation in communities of color.

LaTosha Brown
An award-winning organizer, strategist, and activist, LaTosha Brown is the Co-Founder of Black Voters Matter, an organization dedicated to increasing power in historically marginalized, predominantly Black neighborhoods. In Georgia, they led year-round organizing efforts to help turn out record numbers of voters in 2020 and have led grassroots campaigns across 14 states.

Taifa Smith Butler
Taifa Smith Butler spent nearly a decade leading the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, with a mission of identifying lasting solutions that improve economic opportunity for all Georgians. She worked at the intersection of a number of issues, calling out policies like Georgia’s fines and fees revenue practices and how they systematically disenfranchise and overtax Black and brown voters.

Stacey Abrams
Voting rights champion and founder of Fair Fight Action, Stacey Abrams has been a longtime advocate fighting to make voting accessible for all eligible voters. Her work has been centered around making the voting process inclusive and fighting to ensure the integrity of our voting process and our democracy. After serving as House Minority Leader in the Georgia legislature, she ran for Governor of Georgia and brought national attention to systemic voter suppression prevalent throughout the state. Her persistence in this movement, exemplified by the founding of Fair Fight Action, inspires us to keep up the fight.

The strides we’ve made in protecting the freedom to vote in Georgia — inspiring progress in the rest of the country — would not have been possible without the work of these brave activists. While we have so much work left to do to combat anti-democratic extremism, we know with you on our team, we’ll keep making history.

In solidarity,

The Fair Fight Action Team
