Jack, the fundamental principle of democracy is that each vote should carry equal weight, and the winner should be the candidate with the most votes. However, in the current Electoral College system, certain states receive an unfair advantage, leaving many Americans voiceless.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among several US states and DC to award their electoral votes to the candidate with the most popular votes. The compact will go into effect if states with a total of 270 electoral votes join. If enough states join, we can elect the president by national popular vote.

Currently, 15 states and DC with 195 electoral votes have joined, and Michigan and Minnesota (which are both considering) could add up to 220 electoral votes. The goal is to make the presidential election reflective of the will of the people, rather than a strategic battle to win select states. Other states must also join the compact for the candidate with the most votes to win, as is required in any democracy.
