Dear Friend,
International Women’s Day is a chance to reflect on the powerful contributions women make to the world—as leaders, healers, organizers, sisters, mothers, partners, and so much more. At Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), we see firsthand that too many women lack access to health care. With your help, we can bring lifesaving care where it’s needed most to ensure women everywhere have the resources they need to thrive.
Here’s how we do it together:
It’s estimated that 99 percent of pregnancy-related deaths happen in low-income countries. Our maternal health programs in 25+ countries focus on reducing maternal and infant mortality through pre- and postnatal consultations, emergency obstetric care, and access to family planning services. To ensure our patients feel comfortable in our care, we actively recruit local staff members and work with local leaders to incorporate cultural practices into our medical approach.
Breast and cervical cancer are among the leading causes of cancer-related death among women in low-income countries, despite being preventable and treatable. That’s why MSF’s oncology programs in countries including Mali and Malawi prioritize access to preventive measures like education, regular screenings, and cost-free care.
"I invite all women to come for screening,” says Malian artist Bintou Soumbounou, who also uses her platform to be an MSF ambassador in the fight against breast and cervical cancer.
It’s estimated that one out of three women everywhere will experience some form of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Providing care for victims of sexual violence is a growing part of the medical-humanitarian action of MSF, and we strive to make comprehensive health care available for survivors—of all ages and genders—in all our projects.
This International Women’s Day, MSF is committed to providing care for women everywhere. We know that healthy women create healthier families, communities, and society.
That means ensuring access to specialized care for women and girls everywhere. With the support of this dedicated community, MSF is doing just that.
