Headwaters announces Bilal Alkatout as Interim Executive Director
Headwaters Foundation for Justice is thrilled to announce Bilal Alkatout as our Interim Executive Director.
Most recently Bilal was Headwaters’ Director of Program and Grantmaking and has been a key leader in creating stability at Headwaters as we’ve been co-creating our next chapter as an organization. He is an experienced leader with a deep commitment to equity, justice, and integrity.
With more than 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Bilal has a track record of success leading strategic planning, financial management, and board development while centering strong relationships. He’s also been a longtime Headwaters community member having served as a board member, volunteer, fundraiser, and donor.
As Interim Executive Director, Bilal will promote sustainability for Headwaters staff and provide additional capacity as we bring on new staff and continue to explore organizational structure and shared leadership models. He will be responsible for ensuring organizational stability for programs and operations as Headwaters continues our organizational development work. We are excited to continue collectively writing our next chapter together and to take this step forward in that journey!

Announcing Bush Prize: Minnesota
Headwaters is partnering with the Bush Foundation as one of four community grantmaking partners stewarding the 2023 Bush Prize.
The Bush Prize is an annual award that celebrates organizations that have a culture of innovation and a history of building creative solutions for challenges in their communities. Bush Prize winners in each region will receive a flexible grant of up to 25% of the organization’s last fiscal year expenses, up to $500,000.
As the grantmaking partner for Minnesota, Headwaters will continue our practice of community-led grantmaking to select Minnesota’s Bush Prize winners.
Bush Prize: Minnesota will open in April. You can expect to hear from us soon with more information about prize criteria, how to be considered for the award, and details about information sessions we’ll be hosting to ensure eligible organizations have everything they need.

Investing in Evaluation in 2023
In 2015, Headwaters embarked on a listening tour of past, current, and prospective grantees. That practice of deep listening about what our grantees needed from a philanthropic partner made real changes to how Headwaters does our work to fund community: we shifted funds towards general operating support, prioritized offering multi-year grants, and added support beyond the dollars programming.
These changes have made our grantmaking more effective and responsive for our grantee partners and we are committed to continuing to grow. So, this year, we’re investing in evaluation again.

American Indian Community Gathering: Reimagining The Mounds<[link removed]>

Lower Phalen Creek Project is excited to host this series of community conversations along with our co-hosts from the American Indian Family Center, Ain Duh Yung Center, Oyate Hotanin/InEquality, Metropolitan State University and Saint Paul Indians in Action.
This series is designed specifically to engage the American Indian community in learning sessions led by LPCP’s Cultural Resources Manager, Franky Jackson and guest speakers, followed by conversations facilitated by LeMoine LaPointe that focus on the landscape at what is now known as Indian Mounds Regional Park in Saint Paul.
The March 14th session will be a guided community conversation that builds on our learning, as we explore the question, “What does our future relationship look like at Indian Mounds Park”?
