John,

Today is International Women’s Day. While there’s so much to celebrate, it’s also essential to recognize that policies here in the U.S. leave millions of women of color with little ability to build wealth — no matter how hard they work. Economic justice would have an enormous impact on these women, and we need you to help spread the word to generate support for an equal economic system.

We encourage you to use Prosperity Now’s digital toolkit to spread the word that women everywhere deserve economic justice! [[link removed]]

While women make up 46.6% of the workforce, their pay is still not equal to their White male colleagues. And while White women only get paid 83 cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts, the pay gap gets even wider for women of color — Black women earn 64 cents for every dollar made by White men.… Latinas earn 54 cents … Indigenous women earn 51 cents... and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women earn as low as 50 cents, comparatively.*

Women struggle to overcome sexist and racist economic policies. And, for women of color, those are exacerbated by an economic system that excludes them by design.

Transforming our economy into one that is just, fair, and free from structural racism means ending the disparities that often require women of color to work more and longer just to get by without ever getting ahead.

Repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic have forced more and more women to rely on safety net programs, especially with rising prices on everyday items like groceries, baby supplies, and more. But even this help is fraught because savings penalties in programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) do not allow recipients to adequately save for emergencies. Even one unexpected expense - like the car needing a repair ̶ can be devastating. In fact, 49% of Americans couldn't cover a $400 emergency expense in 2022, up from 32% in 2021.
