It’s International Women’s Day! Countless Texas women have spent decades facing off against injustice and claiming a seat at the table. And today, Texas women continue to fight for progress, whether it’s pushing for racial and social justice or defending our right to healthcare.
Here are 3 bills you should be on the lookout for from iconic Democratic women in the Texas House and cherished allies that aim to expand the rights and ease the burdens of working Texas women:
H.B. 12: Rep. Toni Rose filed legislation that would extend postpartum care for Medicaid recipients from 2 months to 1 year -- helping curb the post-pregnancy mortality rate which is already soaring amongst Black & Brown Texas women.
H.B. 300: This week, the Texas House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on Rep. Donna Howard’s bill, which would exempt menstrual products, baby bottles and supplies, diapers, maternity clothes and more from sales taxes.
C.A.R.E No Matter What Act: Sen. Sarah Eckhardt and Rep. Donna Howard sponsored legislation that would allow reliable healthcare providers like Planned Parenthood to participate in family planning programs to ensure that affordable, essential reproductive healthcare is more accessible.
Though it’s frustrating that legislation like this has to even exist, we’re grateful to have Texas Democratic women in leadership, helping bring relief to countless Texas women and families.
