Dear John,
International Women's Day is a time to honor the social, political, cultural, and economic achievements of women. This year, it has taken on a whole new meaning for our community as women in Iran are fighting for their basic freedoms and for a better future despite system human rights abuses and discrimination.
It is a day to remember the killing of 22-year old Mahsa (Jhina) Amini, which gave birth to a new movement and a powerful call for “Woman, Life, Freedom”. Courageous women from all walks of life, including lawyers, activists, journalists, teachers, are leading the struggle and also teaching us what it means to be a leader. As an Iranian-American organizer working to empower our community and create change here in the U.S., I continue to learn from them and am in awe of what they have accomplished in the face of unimaginable oppression.
For me, as an Iranian-American woman, I am more motivated than ever to do the work that I do at NIAC, from calling on Congress to support the Iranian people, to working to elect Iranian-American women to office, to helping build community during these challenging times.
This International Women’s Day, I’m calling on you to celebrate women’s achievements, support Iranian-women owned businesses, raise awareness about what is going on in Iran, and consider ways you can take action to drive gender parity in your area.
Let’s honor Iranian women who continue their fight each day by continuing our fight here.
In solidarity,
