Friend, As our society uses more bee-killing "neonic" pesticides, bee populations are plummeting -- and without bees, we'd lose many of the foods we love, from coffee to apples to nuts and cereal crops.1,2 So why is Amazon, the world's largest retailer, still allowing these pesticides to be sold on its (virtual) shelves? Take action for the bees by sending a message to Amazon: Stop selling bee-killing pesticides. Neonics, the most widely used insecticides in the world, are highly toxic to our most important pollinators.3 The chemicals cause permanent damage to bees' brains, weaken their immune systems, and harm their ability to navigate to their hives.4 That's a huge problem for our ecosystems and the huge amount of our food that depends on them. We rely on bees to pollinate more than 70 of the 100 crops that provide 90% of the world's food. Despite their toxicity, neonics are commonly available to the public in many home and garden supply stores -- and on Amazon. We need to transition away from using this pesticide so widely, and that's why we're calling on Amazon to stop selling products containing neonics. Will you sign our petition today urging Amazon to take action for our bees and our food supply? We know that change is possible, and that there are safer alternatives to neonics. The Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware and Walmart have made commitments to stop selling or to limit the sale of neonics. Amazon could be next, taking leadership on this issue as one of the biggest companies in the world. There's no time to lose: Around 4 million pounds of these bee-killing chemicals are used on plants across the country every year.5 And they're incredibly pervasive -- neonics can end up in soil and stay actively toxic for years, traveling far and wide to other plants through rainwater and irrigation systems.6 Tens of thousands of citizen advocates like you have already joined the call for Amazon to do its part for the bees and the food we rely on them to pollinate. But we need all hands on deck if we're going to convince Amazon to act. Add your name today. Thank you, Faye Park | |
