Hi John, big ocean news! We have an international ocean treaty. 🎉After years of talks, and fallouts over fishing, marine resources, and funding, member states of the United Nations have FINALLY agreed on a treaty to protect the ocean. It's a huge step in the right direction and we're stoked to see it. Here's an intro: 🌊It's called The High Seas Treaty. The high seas are areas not owned or regulated by an individual country. They make up a whopping 50% of the Earth's surface. 🌊 Before this treaty, there were no legal mechanisms to support the set-up of marine protected areas in the high sea. And now there are! Hello accountability. 🌊These protected spaces will give nature a chance to recover. 🐳🦑🐙🦀 We're celebrating for now, but it's only the beginning of the protections we need to see. Let's keep the ball rolling. ✊ Some longer reads: What is the UN High Seas Treaty and why is it needed? - BBC News For the ocean, Team SAS 🌊 |
