On Monday, we told you about the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights (AUDRi), aimed at ensuring every woman and girl can enjoy safety, freedom, and dignity in the digital world.
Here's another example of how we're changing the rules.
In January, after a 20-year legal battle, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) announced a landmark verdict in Brisa Angulo Losada Vs. Bolivia in favor of Brisa. The Court’s historic ruling holds the State of Bolivia accountable for failing to properly investigate and prosecute the adult relative who repeatedly sexually abused Brisa when she was just 15 years old.
In 2015, Equality Now joined Brisa’s legal team, representing her in the Inter-American System. The Court’s ruling, which included all of Equality Now’s recommendations, will change rape laws and strengthen enforcement throughout Bolivia, where 70% of women surveyed say they’ve been subjected to physical or sexual abuse during their lifetime.
This monumental victory will not only expand access to justice for survivors of sexual violence in Bolivia, but it also sets a strong legal precedent for the whole region. Equality Now and our partners will continue working with the Inter-American system to ensure Bolivia implements the ruling to its full extent, and that other nations in the court’s jurisdiction follow suit.
The wheels of international justice move slowly, but they do move, and there are times when you can see that perseverance pays off. This is one of those times.
We need your help to sustain and expand our efforts to women and girls around the world. Help Equality Now change the rules by making a gift today.
Make your International Women’s Day gift. ([link removed])
Thank you for your partnership, and Happy International Women’s Day!
