On each of my campaigns, my first priority has been meeting as many people as possible to learn what they are *actually* looking for from their elected representatives. That hasn’t changed now that I’m running for the U.S. Senate.

It’s officially been a week since we launched, and we’ve already embarked on a statewide listening tour, starting in Detroit. We checked out some small businesses around the city, toured the new Union Carpenters & Millwrights Skilled Training Center, and then headed to Franklin Wright Settlements to see their childcare programs in action. I heard a lot about the need for affordable housing, accessible child care, and access to capital for Black entrepreneurs starting new businesses.

Our next two stops were Flint and Grand Rapids. I joined a roundtable of local labor leaders in Flint to talk about how we can make more things in Michigan, lower costs for things like prescription drugs, and create good-paying jobs with dignity. In Grand Rapids, I was able to check out some small businesses and chat with local leaders. West Michigan is the fastest growing part of our state and I heard quite a bit about the impact of rising prices, improving food security and access to healthy food, and the needs of our entrepreneurs — especially businesspeople of color — as they build their businesses in Michigan.

Then it was on to Lansing, where last night a few hundred friends got together for our first rally. This is the heart of my Congressional district and I’m so grateful to the friends, supporters, activists, and local officials who have helped teach me what it means to be an elected leader.

It’s been a busy first week of this campaign, and we’re just getting started. It’s time for a new generation of leaders who think differently, and I look forward to showing the people of Michigan that I will fight for them every day, the way I have for the citizens of my district.
