$25 Minimum Wage for All "Healthcare CA Workers" Would Increase Hospital Closures

In February, union-backed California state Democratic Senators introduced SB-525, a bill that would give all “healthcare workers” a minimum wage of $25 an hour. Hardly a veiled distortion, the bill applies not to nurses or doctors (i.e. individuals colloquially recognized as healthcare workers) but supply stockers, janitors, security guards, or anyone skilled or unskilled that happens to work at hospitals or healthcare facilities.

The 2010 Affordable Care Act bans physician-owned hospitals from expanding and prevents new ones from participating in Medicare or Medicaid. Proponents of this ban argue that these hospitals are a net negative because they “cherry-pick” healthier patients and prescribe unnecessary treatments to increase their bottom lines.

Single-payer healthcare is back on the legislative agenda in New York, California, and Oregon. And just like previous efforts by state governments to take over their health insurance markets, these new ones are nothing to celebrate.

Single-payer healthcare invariably leads to long waits for low-quality care, all paid for by sky-high taxes.
