Refugees enrich our communities as neighbors, coworkers, teachers, and friends, offering invaluable contributions to our society.

They deserve to feel safe and secure in the country they have come to call home, without the constant threat of being uprooted from everything they have worked hard to build.

But as things stand right now, 78,000 Afghan refugees residing in the United States face a looming threat to their legal status because their two-year authorization to remain in the country is set to expire soon, putting them at risk of being deported.

We cannot sit idly by while our fellow human beings face such a terrible fate.

Tens of thousands of Afghans had to flee their homes due to persecution, war, and other forms of violence that were made worse by U.S foreign policy and they are in desperate need of assistance.

We have to show compassion and empathy towards the people most impacted by our nation's decisions.

Thankfully, the Afghan Adjustment Act has bipartisan support and follows a proven model for refugee resettlement legislation that will establish a clear path to provide assistance to refugees.

This is not a matter of partisan politics, it is a humanitarian issue that requires urgent action.

By advocating for the swift passage of the Afghan Adjustment Act, we can ensure that these refugees can continue to build their lives in safety and with the dignity they deserve.
