A Message from Congresswoman Sherrill

Dear Friend,

It has been an exciting few weeks hearing from you across our community. Over the past few weeks, I kicked off my tour of NJ-11 to highlight the 14 Community Projects I secured in this year’s budget that are bringing over $18 million in federal funds to our district. Your hard-earned tax dollars are coming back to our community to increase public safety, improve water quality, mitigate the risk of flooding, expand access to health care and strengthen local infrastructure. I gathered with community leaders to announce the following ten projects that will soon be underway:

Stay tuned to learn more about my visits to additional NJ-11 Community Project sites in Madison, Woodland Park, Morristown and at William Paterson University in the coming weeks!

Additionally, I spoke with NJ-11 veterans about the need for access to mental healthcare and local law enforcement about how we can continue to work together to fight auto theft. I also celebrated Black History Month at the Essex County African American Heritage Month Celebration and teamed up with Empower the Village to speak with Black-owned small business owners in Morris and Essex. Finally, we came together as a community to mark the anniversary of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Keep reading to learn more about each of these events.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Valentines for Seniors program! Together, we distributed 6,000 valentines to seniors across our community.

Check out my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest news and updates from my office.

Take care,

Recognizing the Strength and Resilience of the Ukrainian People

Image
Over the past year, the Ukrainian people have shown incredible bravery and resolve in the face of a brutal invasion. I was honored to join the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey to mark the anniversary. I’m so proud as the NJ-11 community continues to stand with our Ukrainian neighbors and friends in support of their fight for freedom and democracy. Read my full statement here.

American Rescue Plan Funds a Ladder Truck for Morris Township

Image
I fought hard to ensure direct state and local government funding was included in the historic American Rescue Plan with flexibility to meet a wide range of community needs. Morris Township used a portion of their ARP funding to purchase a much needed ladder truck for the Fire Department! It was wonderful to see the truck and hear from Chief Nunn and his team how this upgraded technology will help our first responders keep our community safe. Thank you to Mayor Gyorfy and the Morris Township Committee for your partnership in allocating these funds.

My JerseySTRONG Agenda: Improving Mental Healthcare for Veterans & Curbing Auto Theft

Earlier this year, I introduced my JerseySTRONG agenda– five pieces of legislation that prioritize issues that are front and center for New Jersey families. Over the past few weeks, I met with local veterans to discuss the importance of improving access to mental healthcare in our community, and had a conversation with a local police chief to discuss how we can curb auto theft in NJ-11.
Image
I joined Congressman Kean, SOSVets Stakeholders, Catholic Charities, local electeds and NJ-11 veterans at Hope House in Dover to discuss the VET Centers for Mental Health Act. As the two members of Congress representing Morris County, we’ve heard firsthand about the need for a Vet Center that can meet the needs of the people of NJ-11 and NJ-07. We’re working together on this because caring for our veterans isn’t a partisan issue, it’s a moral one.

Image
I had a conversation with Livingston Police Chief Gary Marshuetz about how my Auto Theft Prevention Act will help keep residents safe. This bipartisan legislation will give state and local police departments the resources they need to fight auto theft.

Celebrating Black History Month

Image
I sat down with Ayo Sanderson Wilson, Cheryl Easley, and Motown Caribbean Catering owner Dawn Smith to discuss how Empower the Village is working to support Black owned small businesses with the resources they need to address challenges like access to capital and health care coverage. Listen to my conversation with Ayo here.

Saveur Creole in Montclair serves traditional creole food and promotes Haitian culture by doing so. Thank you to owner Ron Mompoint for telling me about your restaurant and letting me try some of your food. Your love for cooking comes out in the food and I can’t wait to bring my family back to eat.

Heather Carter uses her passion for art to run Carter Fine Art, which promotes artist representation and curation. She showed me several beautiful pieces by black artists, including one by her father, Robert Carter!

I joined County Executive Joe DiVincenzo and the Essex County Commissioners in honoring two outstanding leaders, Mayor Ted Green and Senator Renee Burgess at Essex County’s African American Heritage Month Celebration.

Joining the Morris County League of Municipalities

Image
It was great to stop by the Morris County League of Municipalities February meeting to check in with bipartisan local electeds from across the county. Our NJ-11 Mayors, Council, and Committee Members are incredibly dedicated public servants and I always look forward to the opportunity to touch base on the local issues most important to them and our constituents.
