John, This month we’ve been on the road (snowstorms permitting) across Iowa’s 4th District, visiting towns of 1,000 people or less. That’s because our campaign is committed to representing every community in our district, no matter how big or small. Help us stay on the road all the way to election day -- chip in $5 or more today to keep J.D. out there, meeting voters and building momentum! In New Hartford (pop. 492), we spoke candidly about the struggle to access affordable healthcare in our rural communities. Hearing folks open up about how difficult it is to stay healthy is heartbreaking -- everyone deserves access to quality healthcare providers, regardless of where they live. Bronson’s (pop. 319) town hall had a young attendee, Maggie, who is hoping to run for President one day. We're all inspired every day on the trail, especially when our young leaders are already getting engaged and involved in our democracy. We’re also constantly impressed by the kindness of Iowans. With J.D. on the campaign trail, he hasn’t had time to fix a hole in his jacket -- so a supporter in Bronson helped out to make sure he keeps warm. Folks in Gowrie (pop. 1,037) showed up to talk about how they can come together and keep their local grocery store open. They aren’t alone in being a small community trying to figure out this problem to ensure that they still have fresh fruits and vegetables in town. Dollar stores and gas stations aren’t adequate replacements to grocery stores, and this is an issue that is not getting nearly enough attention in Washington. On a cold evening in Ireton (pop. 604), folks in the community huddled together to discuss getting money and special interests out of politics and enforcing antitrust policies. J.D. is passionate about enforcing antitrust policies so the little guy, everyday farms, and small businesses have a fighting chance. J.D. also got to meet one of his political heroes, activist Ady Barkan. People like Ady and J.D. are a new wave of leaders working towards improving access to and lowering the cost of healthcare. This tour is about more than giving speeches or shaking as many hands as possible. It’s about listening to those who’ve been left behind by politics as usual in this country -- and about finding solutions to the problems faced by folks in rural America today. Help us stay on the road to go to more schools, community centers, and legion halls: chip in $5 or more today. Thanks for your support! -- Team Scholten |
