Team,
On today's anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," I am always reminded of my friend and hero, the late Congressman John Lewis.
In 1965, Congressman Lewis led over 600 civil rights activists across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to demand voting rights and protections. Their peaceful protest was met with violence from state troopers and extremists, and Congressman Lewis bore scars on his head from the attack for the rest of his life.
He bravely fought for the right to vote, because he knew that voicing our opinions at the ballot box is a cornerstone of American democracy.
On the anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," I hope you'll join me in honoring Congressman Lewis's memory and the countless Civil Rights activists who have been leading the movement for social justice for decades. Will you sign on to our petition to demand Congress defend our right to vote? >> [link removed]
In 2023 alone, state legislators have introduced 150 restrictive voting bills and 27 election interference bills. These laws brazenly attempt to restrict and sabotage the rights of voters of color, seniors, and young people.
For far too long, voter suppression has been wielded to silence the voices of marginalized communities. As citizens of this nation, each of us has a role to play in the fight for equality – because none of us are equal until we all are.
I have proudly co-sponsored legislation expanding and strengthening the government's ability to respond to voting discrimination and protect the voices of ALL American voters.
Congressman Lewis's fight lives on in all of us. On today's anniversary, please join me in calling on Congress to defend our constitutional right to vote. >> [link removed]
In solidarity,
