Friend — in December, the EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers acted to protect more waterways under the Clean Water Act.
This Clean Water Restoration Rule ensures that waters — from small streams, to rivers, and wetlands — are protected from unregulated pollution and destruction.
This week, the House is set to vote on a bill to overturn those safeguards using the Congressional Review Act, an extreme legislative tool that overrules administration rules with a simple majority vote in the House and Senate.
Friend: there is a real risk that polluters and their anti-clean water allies in Congress will pass this dangerous bill. What’s worse — if this vote passes, future administrations will also be blocked from issuing similar clean water safeguards.
We’re asking every LCV member to reach out to their representatives today, before the vote. It only takes a moment to send a message.
We don’t have much time before Congress votes. Take action right now to preserve protections for clean water and help us reach our goal of 5,000 signatures >>
These new safeguards are incredibly important. Repealing them would open the floodgates to the degradation of waterways that feed into our rivers, lakes, and drinking water sources, and to the destruction of wetlands that protect our communities from severe storms and flooding.
We cannot allow Congress to reverse progress. Too many communities — especially Indigenous communities, communities of color, and low-wealth communities — still lack clean water. We need to continue to build upon the EPA’s new safeguards, not throw them aside.
If polluters and their allies in Congress succeed, it will set a dangerous precedent, jeopardizing all of the progress the Biden administration has made on protecting our water, air, lands, climate, public health, and more. And with a radical Supreme Court looking to strike down more of the administration’s actions, our environmental safeguards are at serious risk.
We must demand that Congress choose to protect the health of our families and communities instead of the profits of corporate polluters.
Please, take action right now, Friend. If they don’t hear from you soon, Congress will make a mistake that will threaten waterways in communities like yours.
This moment will have a long-lasting impact on the future of clean water and environmental justice in this country. Thank you for standing with us.
Onward,
Madeleine Foote
