Dear team,
Yesterday, the Center for Reproductive Rights filed a groundbreaking lawsuit on behalf of Texans harmed by the state's abortion bans. Zurawski v. Texas is the first lawsuit brought on behalf of women denied abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
The Center is holding the state of Texas accountable for what happened to these women. They will not be silenced or ignored. We need your help.
Abortion is a standard, necessary, and critical part of reproductive health care, and the decision to have an abortion at any point, for any reason, should be the pregnant person's in consultation with their doctor. But all abortion care is being denied under Texas's abortion bans—even when it is medically necessary.
Five Texans with severe complications during their pregnancies and two Texas obstetrician-gynecologists are suing the state of Texas over its bans on abortion. This lawsuit seeks to rightfully return life-or-death medical decisions to pregnant people and their doctors, because these lifesaving decisions should NOT be decided by politicians and state officials. We are taking every legal avenue possible to help as many women and pregnant people as we can, wherever we can, but we can't do it alone.
Doctors are afraid to help pregnant people under extreme and confusing abortion bans—even those with life-threatening obstetric complications—in the face of severe penalties that range from the loss of their medical license to 99 years in prison, and pregnant people are paying the price. The Court must act to clarify the exceptions and let doctors use their own discretion.
Will you make an emergency gift to the Center today to ensure we have the critical resources needed to continue this fight?
Pregnant people will die if these bans remain in place and doctors are unable to use their best judgment. Multiple abortion bans in Texas and other states are causing extensive and often irreversible harm to pregnant people's health. If the state of Texas is okay with treating pregnant people this way, they will have to say it to them directly in a court of law.
Right now we need you with us as we fight to prove that abortion is essential, life-saving health care. Join us by making a gift today.
Thank you for being with us in this fight,
Nancy Northup
