When Will Schick was accepted as a Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellow in 2021, he said he was apprehensive about how he’d transfer skills ([link removed]) from his previous career — as a Marine — into journalism.

“The fellowship made me feel really comfortable with who I was, and also gave me the confidence to speak out about the things I felt were important,” said Will, who’s now the editor-in-chief of Street Sense Media in Washington, D.C., and a member ([link removed]) of Poynter’s National Advisory Board.

Applications for the next cohort of the fellowship — a power-packed, year-long experience designed to give early-career journalists the coaching, network and skills they need to have a long and lasting career in journalism — close Friday.

** Telling Stories of Faith and the Faithful

In person, Tuesday, April 18, Los Angeles, California, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
In this one-day workshop, working journalists who want to improve and enhance their coverage and understanding of faith and faith communities will convene with experts and peers. This program is designed for working journalists — not just religion reporters, but writers, editors, photographers, videographers, producers and others who want a deeper understanding of how faith is among the most important forces shaping our communities.
During a daylong series of speakers, panels and peer work, participants will learn where and how to find faith communities in their coverage area; find connections within those communities to their leaders and citizens; learn how to build source lists and create relationships before news breaks; think through how people of faith (whether religious leaders or believers) can be incorporated into everyday stories; and more.
Cost: Free, with coffee and lunch provided (requires a refundable $25 fee to guarantee your spot). Register by March 28.

Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship 2023-24

As a Poynter-Koch fellow, you’ll receive nearly a year of career development, delivered by seasoned journalism veterans and industry experts who care deeply for early-career journalists. You will have the opportunity to find placement as a paid, full-time journalist at a participating news outlet, joining colleagues who are passionate about journalism and the free press. You can also apply if you’re already working within a newsroom that supports your acceptance into this program.
Our team of journalism experts will personally guide you over almost a year of career development and learning — from each other, from your newsrooms and from our robust, real-world curriculum.

An Evening With Kerry Sanders
