Friend,
It’s day four of the Senate impeachment trial,
and the House managers’ last day of addressing the chamber before
Trump’s legal team takes over, so I wanted to send around a brief
update on where things stand:
The seven impeachment managers,
all members of the House of Representatives, have made a masterful,
evidence-based case against the President, citing both his abuses of
power and his obstruction of our congressional investigation. They’ve
also made a compelling argument for the Senate to allow witnesses and
documents, which can be summarized as: If you don’t believe that Trump
did anything wrong, then why wouldn’t you want to allow evidence that
could exonerate him?
Republican Senators, meanwhile, are trying
their hardest to make a mockery out of this entire process. They’re
walking out on my colleagues, openly scoffing when they speak, and
treating this grave matter with complete disdain. But what do you
expect from GOP Senators who swore, long before the trial began, to
not act as impartial jurors?
As an attorney myself, I can’t
help but imagine what would happen if this were any other trial. If a
presumptive juror said, “I'm not impartial about this at all” like
Mitch McConnell did last month, they would not be allowed to sit on
that jury. If a lawyer for the defendant considered refusing to admit
key evidence and witness testimony, they would be laughed out of the
courtroom. Should we not hold the President of the United States, his
legal team, and his allies in Congress to the same standard?
Of
course we should. So
if you want to see the Senate hold a fair trial, will you sign this
petition today demanding that every single Senator vote in favor of
allowing all the evidence, including new documents and witnesses, to
come to
light?
Best, Ted
