Last year, the five largest publicly traded oil companies raked in $264.3 billion in profit.

These companies — Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, and TotalEnergies — engaged in price gouging to haul in record-breaking profits. They used Russia’s war on Ukraine as an excuse to squeeze Americans at the pump and enrich their wealthy executives and Wall Street.

It’s wrong, and these companies must pay a price and provide relief for the American people. That’s why I just helped reintroduce the Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act to stop Big Oil’s profiteering and send quarterly rebates that would put money back in people’s pockets.

Will you sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act to end the price gouging and return money back to the American people? This is important to hold oil companies accountable and continue lowering costs.

This bill would tax the largest oil companies the difference in the price per barrel of oil — domestic and imported — for 2022 onward and the pre-pandemic average price. This would allow us to claw back these windfall profits and hold Big Oil accountable going forward.

That money, estimated to be nearly $50 billion annually, would then be returned to consumers as direct relief with quarterly rebates.

This is greed, plain and simple.

Big Oil saw a chance to crush American families and line their own pockets, and they took advantage of it. Russia’s war on Ukraine was just their excuse to cover up the truth.
